Accessibility statement

Tabstop Studio fixes accessibility problems for a living, so this site has to hold up first. Here’s what we built in, how we test it, and where it still falls short.

Manual screen reader check of this version: pending

Standard

This website, tabstopstudio.com, run by Tabstop Studio (a trade name of Luven Technologies LLC), targets WCAG 2.2 Level AA (covers WCAG 2.1 AA). We don’t use an overlay or accessibility widget.

What we built in

  • A skip link to the main content, and landmarks for the header, navigation, main content and footer.
  • A visible focus indicator on every link, button and form control: a two-tone yellow and navy ring that holds its contrast on every background.
  • Text contrast of at least 4.5:1 in both light and dark color schemes. The scheme follows your device setting, and the theme button in the header lets you choose one.
  • Layouts that reflow without sideways scrolling at 320 pixels wide and at 400% zoom.
  • No carousels and no autoplaying media. The one animation, on the home page, plays once for under five seconds and doesn’t play when your device asks for reduced motion.
  • A contact form with visible labels, hints linked to their fields, and an error summary that links to each problem.
  • Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed by the Braille Institute for readers with low vision.

How we test it

Every build of the site runs an automated test suite:

  • axe-core scans of every page against WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 A and AA rules plus best practices, at desktop and mobile widths, in light and dark mode. The build must report zero violations.
  • A keyboard test that tabs through every page, checks each control shows a visible focus indicator, and checks focus never gets trapped.
  • A test that completes the contact form by keyboard alone, including the error messages.
  • A reflow test of every page at 320 pixels wide.
  • A check that no page loads anything from another website: fonts, images and video are all served from this domain.

Automated tools catch only part of what matters, so pages also get checked by hand with a screen reader (VoiceOver on macOS with Safari). The first full manual pass of this version is still to come; this statement will show its date.

Known limitations

  • The demo store has a “before” version that is deliberately inaccessible, because it exists to show common defects. It is labeled as such, kept out of search engines, and excluded from this site’s automated tests. The “after” version is the accessible one.
  • The demo clip is a silent screen recording of a keyboard-only task. Its captions repeat the on-screen text, and a step-by-step description is on the same page. A version recorded with VoiceOver is coming.
  • The optional date field uses your browser’s built-in date picker, which looks and behaves slightly differently between browsers.
